In 2014, the OAM established the Sendry Memorial Scholarship, a special award set up in memory of Past President and long-time OAM Ethics and Education Chair Doug Sendry of the Portage County Domestic Relations Court.
The scholarship will award a stipend of up to $2,500.00 to an OAM member to attend a CLE program of the recipient’s choice, thereby providing another opportunity to further the education of our current members. The courses may be selected from accredited sources, including but not limited to, the National Judicial College (“NJC”) , the ABA , the National Center for State Courts and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. Just a few examples of courses offered by the NJC in 2016 include: Decision Making, in Nashville, TN; Best Practices in Handling Cases with Self-Represented Litigants, in Reno; Advanced Bench Skills, in San Diego; Dispute Resolution Skills, in Savannah; Drugs in America Today, What Every Judge Needs to Know, in Las Vegas. Courses were also offered in Bar Harbor, ME; Ashland, OR; Clearwater, FL; and Philadelphia, PA, just to name a few cities.
The only thing the OAM asks in return is that the recipient of the award develop and present a judicial college course related to the CLE at a future OAM Conference. Don’t worry, the OAM education committee will gladly assist the recipient in designing and presenting the course.
